What is carbon offsetting and why is it important for your wedding?

Carbon offsetting is a way of reducing or compensating for the greenhouse gas emissions that are created by the activity that you are taking part in. The goal is to balance out the amount of greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere with an equivalent reduction in emissions elsewhere. For example, if you were to carbon offset your travel, you compensate for the amount of carbon your vehicle releases into the world by planting trees.

Carbon offsetting might be a growing trend, but few consider it for their wedding day, and I get it: your wedding is romantic, it’s luxe, it’s dreamy - and you don’t want to think about pollution or the state of the planet when you’re planning the day of your dreams! I hear you on that.

However, it is important to think about carbon offsetting when you plan your wedding because it is the type of event that can grow and grow, with lots of moving parts. The more moving parts, the more of a footprint you’re leaving once it’s all over (and not to mention there’s now 3 kilos of wedding cake in the freezer and a large bag of dry cleaning). Choosing to offset your wedding means that you can enjoy a simpler day, without worrying about the environmental impact it will have on others and future generations.

If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, then there are plenty of ways to do this. Read our blog post here on easy swaps when planning your wedding.
